Providence Upsets No. 9 BC
Freshman Nets Game-Winner in Hometown
October 17, 2007
NEWTON, Mass. – What a homecoming for Alex Redding.
The Newton, Mass., native returned to his hometown Tuesday and scored the winning goal in the Providence men’s soccer team’s 1-0 upset over No. 9 Boston College.
The freshman raced past the Eagles’ defense on a through ball from classmate Matt Marcin and fired a left-footed shot past BC goalkeeper Chris Brown in the 35th minute. Timothy Murray (four saves) and the PC defense made sure the goal held up, giving the Friars their first victory over BC in eight years and improving their record to 7-5-1.
The victory over 9th-ranked BC (7-3-1) was the Friars’ first victory over a ranked opponent this season. They last beat the Eagles in 1999 in a 3-1 season-opening road victory.
Redding, who scored his first collegiate goal in a 2-0 triumph over Marquette on Saturday found the net for the second consecutive match.
The Eagles did have their chances, finishing with an 11-7 shot advantage. Keeper Brown made just one save in the loss.
Murray’s four saves gave the Haverhill, Mass. native his sixth clean sheet of the season, including the last two matches. Murray has not allowed a goal in the last 184:47.
