May 17, 2009
The Western Mass. Pioneers fell to 0-4 after dropping a set of weekend games against Crystal Palace Baltimore at the Real Maryland Monarchs.
The Pioneers were outscored 4-0 over the two games, falling 1-0 to CP Baltimore and 3-0 to Real Maryland un USL Division 2 action.
In the first match, the Pioneers were done in thanks to a 28th minute goal from Matthew Mbuta.
Billy Chiles made his debut in the Palace goal and recorded the shutout.
Mbuta had tested Pioners goalie Matthew Jones twice early on but in the 28th minute the young Cameroonian got the better of the Western Mass 'keeper. A Pioneers' defender misplayed the ball attempting to clear his lines and Mbuta stole in, beat another defender and slotted past Jones with ease.
In the second match, the Pioneers were the stepping stone vaulting Real Maryland into second place, one point behind CP Baltimore.
The Monarchs possessed the ball for the majority of the first 25 minutes. Western Mass would counter holding possession for the next 20 minutes. Both teams were unable to finish in the final third of the field so the score remained tied at 0-0 going into the locker rooms.
True to form, the Monarchs reacted to Coach Anthony Hudson at halftime and came out on fire at the start of the second half.
In the first five minutes striker Gary Brooks drew the Western Mass keeper out to the right side of the goal and then slid the ball back to an oncoming Jimmy Stevens in the middle of the box. Stevens slotted the ball in calmly for his first goal of the season.
The Monarchs later capitalized on a set piece from a Victor Ramirez free kick. Yendry Diaz put away a solid header on the back post from a ball that was misjudged by the Pioneers keeper. Unlike earlier in the season, the goal stood giving Yendry his first goal and Ramirez his second point.
After an onslaught of attack from Western Mass, Real Maryland FC put the game away in the 77th minute. Gary Brooks continued his scoring ways with his third of the season to seal the deal for the Monarchs.
