I started in an offsides position and came back onside and my man just didnt follow me, said Phelan. I knew I was playing in the middle of the goal and just had to deflect it one way or the other and I was able to get a good read on it and it went it.
Hes got on the end of it and put it away well, said Head Coach Steve Nicol.
The match also was the debut for the Revolutions two recent signings. Thirty-one year-old Serbian Ilija Stolica came on for Zack Schilawski in the 72nd minute and 22 year-old Brazilian Roberto Linck also made his debut for the Revs in the 80th minute, coming in for Khano Smith.
Stolica signed on July 30th, but just got his P-1 Visa and arrived yesterday.
Im excited first of all, that I arrived here in the United States, and Im excited to play on the Revolution, said Stolica. Most important thing, I think, that we won, that we have three points. That was our goal and we succeeded. For me, what I can say, it was a little bit difficult to send in because I arrived yesterday and didnt sleep well. But Im happy that we won and well see the next few days to recover and be in better shape for the next game.
Linck arrived earlier in the week, but still has had little time to train with the team.
The first game is always very exciting, said Linck. I was very excited to come and it was great. We got the win. It couldnt be better to come in and the teams winning and get this win that we really needed.
D.C. United had the first chance of the match in the 12th minute when Pablo Hernandez got on the end of a cross from the left flank. Hernandezs header from about 12 yards out lacked pace and was well saved by Reis.
Zack Schilawski tried to get something going for the Revs in the 38th minute, attempting a long range blast from about 30 yards. Schilawskis effort forced a dive out of Hamid, but rolled just wide of the far post.
Goalkeeper Matt Reis came up big for the Revs in the 56th minute, coming quickly off his line to deny Pablo Hernandez, after he was played behind the defense by Branko Boskovic. Boskovic got the rebound, but blasted his shot from the top of the box high of with Reis rushing to get back in position.
Chris Pontius should have equalized for D.C. in the 63rd minute after he got the ball in the box from the left flank. Pontius was wide open just a few yards from goal, but got the ball caught up in his feet and the Revs defense was able to clear.
Former Revolution striker Adam Cristman had a great opportunity for D.C. in the 79th minute, getting on the end of a Hernandez corner kick and heading it downwards. His effort from point blank range went just wide of the net.
Tierney put in another dangerous free kick in the 85th minute that was poorly cleared by a D.C. defender. The ball fell right to Kenny Mansally, whose effort beat Hamid, but was just wide of the far post.
Truth be told we didnt play well, said Nicol. We didnt pass the ball well, but at the same time, the [SuperLiga] game we had in midweek, I think it really took its toll on us. We really didnt have much in the legs and obviously with Kevin [Alston] and Marko [Perovic out due to injury]; it really has a big effect.
The Revs next play the Houston Dynamo on August 14th at Gillette Stadium.
