Passion Win Fourth Straight

Trounce New Jersey, 6-1

June 22, 2008

The Connecticut Passion earned its fourth straight victory in impressive fashion with a 6-1 win over the New Jersey Wildcats at Reese Stadium on the campus of Yale University Saturday.

With the win, the Passion are now 4-2-2 on the year and unbeaten in their last five matches.

Furtuna Velaj (Westhill High School) scored her fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute of play to open the scoring at 1-0 in favor of CT Passion. Velaj weaved her way through two defenders and took a shot that beat Wildcats goalie Elizabeth Cook.

The Wildcats had a good chance to even the game when in the 8th minute a shot by Ashley Lunemann rang off the right goal post. It was one of the final glimmers of hope for the visitors as they were outplayed the remainder of the way by the Passion.

The Passion took a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute when a shot by Courtney McMahon bounced off a Wildcat and into the net for an own goal. Seven minutes later Nat Urbas (Sacred Heart) tallied for the 5th time this year thanks to a nice pass from Courtney McMahon. Ahna Johnson’s (Fairfield) unassisted goal, her second of the year, rounded out the first half scoring and gave the Passion a 4-nil advantage at the break.

Lauren Erwin (Boston University) and Brittany Duhamel each scored for the first time this year giving the Passion a 6-0 lead. Corrine Bildstein broke the shutout for Passion netminder Nikki Weiss when she put her second goal of the season in the left side of the net in the 89th minute.
