Passion Jam Gunners
Move Over .500 With 2-1 Win
June 17, 2008
Quinnipiac’s Fortuna Velaj scored the game-winning goal to lead the Connecticut Passion past the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners, 2-1, in W-League action this weekend.
Velaj’s unassisted goal came in the 71st minute of play and broke a 1-1 tie. Velaj weaved past two Lady Gunner defenders to score with a left footed kick into the right side of the net past goalkeeper Jessica Chisley.
Velaj’s heroics were not expected, as the Passion had taken a 1-0 lead on Maggie Westfal’s (Yale) first goal of the season. Westfal converted a pretty pass from Nat Urbas (Sacred Heart) that went behind the Lady Gunners defense.
Westfal’s goal in the 30th minute was followed six minutes later by a red card against Maria Mohammed. Velaj’s penalty kick sailed high over the right side of the net, but the die seemed cast in Connecticut’s favor as the winless Lady Gunners would be force to play the final 54 minutes of the game short a player.
Despite several good efforts, including a shot off the right goal post by Urbas in the 54th minute, the Passion could not beat Chisley a second time. Fredericksburg drew even on Kylie Hayes second goal of the season in the 64th minute. Hayes unassisted goal came as she drew Passion goalie Nikki Weiss to the right of the net and then put the ball past her in the lower left hand corner.
The Passion (3-2-2) then took the lead for good on Velaj’s tally to run their undefeated streak to three games and their unbeaten mark to four games.
The Passion out shot the Lady Gunners 14-6. Weiss has four saves while Chisley was credited with six.
The Passion hosts the New Jersey Wildcats at Reese Field on the campus of Yale University on June 21.
