Velaj Makes Team of the Week for Third Time
July 24, 2008
Connecticut Passion forward Furtuna Velaj was named to the W-League Team of the Week for the third time this season.
The Westhill High School (Conn.) product scored both CFC goals in a 2-1 upset win over the playoff-bound Boston Renegades on July 16 at Sage Park in Berlin.
Velaj was the Passion’s leading scorer in its first season of W-League play. She had a team-high eight goals to go along with one assist for 17 points. Her shot just wide of the net in the third minute of extra time nearly tied the game this past Sunday night, an eventual 1-0 loss to the Northeast Division champion Washington Freedom.
Velaj was one of seven players on the Passion roster who had either just graduated from or are still in high school. Despite the team’s youth, it posted a highly respectable 7-5-2 mark in what most experts felt was the most competitive division in the 41 team league.
Velaj was joined by a Renegade on the Team of the Week, as Boston renegade Ashlee Pistorius was named a reserve for her goal in a 1-1 draw against the Washington Freedom.
