Passion Close Out First Season
End Inaugural Campaign with Loss
July 21, 2008
Rebecca Moros waited until the last game of the season to score a goal, but the Washington midfielder made it count with a game-winner against the Connecticut Passion in a 1-0 Freedom victory Sunday in the season finale for both clubs.
Moros was given a penalty kick from 12 yards out when the Passion’s Megan Ashforth (Yale) was assessed a yellow card. Moros made good on the opportunity on a kick to the upper right corner of the net past CFC goal keeper Kelly Boudreau (Farmington High School).
The defending W-League champions, Washington closed the campaign 11-1-2 and will have a bye in the first round of the upcoming playoff. The Passion closed their inaugural W-League season at 7-5-2.
Washington was forced to play one player short for the final nine minutes of the game when Kate Golebiowski was given a red card. Despite the advantage, the Passion were not able to fine the equalixer, coming ever so close when an open shot in the 89th minute by leading scorer Furtuna Valej went just wide of the goal.
Despite the loss in the final game, CFC coach Dave Clarke called the season “an unqualified success.”
“There were lots of positives, especially in the area of individual growth by our players,” Clarke said. “We had a very respectable record, were in the playoff hunt almost until the final match, and created a solid foundation to take forward until next year.”
