Parkhurst has been training with the National Team in Colorado for the past week. The 24-year-old central defender is one of 15 players recalled from that group to remain with the team for Wednesday’s match, while an additional five players were added from European clubs and the Chicago Fire, which was eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs last week.
Parkhurst, who was recently honored with Major League Soccer’s Fair Play Award for the second consecutive season, has made three appearances for the U.S. National Team. The 2008 Revolution Defender of the Year most recently appeared for the full national team on Jan. 20, playing the second half of the U.S.’ 2-0 victory against Sweden.
Parkurst represented his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as he was named one of three “overage” players on Under-23 head coach Peter Nowak’s 18-man roster. Parkhurst played all 270 minutes as the U.S. went 1-1-1 in group play and did not qualify for the medal round.
The U.S. will host Guatemala in the last CONCACAF Semifinal Round qualifier on Wednesday night in what will be the first-ever World Cup qualifier in the state of Colorado. The Americans have already secured their spot in the final round of qualifying along with Costa Rica and El Salvador, with the remaining three teams to be decided on the final match-day. Guatemala currently sits three points behind Trinidad and Tobago in Group 1 and must win to have any hope of advancing to the next round.
