Own Goal Benefits UConn
Huskies Get Past Stony Brook, 1-0
September 4, 2008
STORRS, Conn. - The No. 3 University of Connecticut men's soccer team took advantage of an own goal to get by Stony Brook, 1-0, Wednesday night at Joseph J. Marrone Stadium.
In the 75th minute, the Huskies (2-0-1) took a 1-0 lead after Seawolve defender Aaron Woodruff deflected the ball past goalkeeper David Ditrich for an own goal.
The Huskies had an early shot advantage, leading the visiting team 11-2 in the first period. UConn came close to scoring first as a corner kick by Akeem Priestley was mishandled by Ditrich and put onto the foot of O'Brian White. With his back to the net, White tapped the ball over his shoulder and just before reaching the goal, the Stony Brook defense moved into the box to block the ball over the net and out of play.
Both teams played solid defense throughout the game as UConn's front line moved the ball well and out-shot Stony Brook 19-7 on the night.
Ditrich ended the game with nine saves and one goal allowed as UConn's Josh Ford picked up three saves in his second shutout of the season and 16th of his career.
Connecticut returns to action Saturday, Sept. 6 against Boston University at 7:00 p.m. in Morrone Stadium. The Terriers are 0-2-0 after losing to both No. 2 Boston College and UMass Amherst.
