Old Dominion Knocks Out Brown
Loss Just Bears Second of Season
November 29, 2007
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It took nearly 107 minutes of soccer, but Old Dominion was able to upset the one-loss Brown University men’s soccer team, 2-1, in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Wednesday.
Old Dominion’s golden goal came in the 106:45 mark, when Nane Jospeh sent a ball up to Ambane Emmanuel. Emmanuel's shot from 16 yards out looped over Brown goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand and into the back of the net.
Brown (15-2-1) got its lone goal from senior Kevin Davies, but it wasn’t enough.
Old Dominion (14-6-3) lit up the scoreboard first after A.J. Kulp blasted a free kick past Grandstrand from 45 yards out. The ball sailed directly over the Bears' defensive wall and to the right corner of the goal at the 11 minute mark.
The Monarchs held the lead going into halftime, but the Bears were able to score just three minutes into the half on a goal by Davies. Davies used his left foot to knock one past goalkeeper Evan Newton to tie the game, 1-1.
The Bears kept attacking the stingy Monarch defense, and out-shot Old Dominion 18-10 for the game. At the 80 minute mark, Davies took a shot at the top of the penalty box, but went just high of the goal. The Bears also had great scoring opportunities by sophomore Nick Elenz-Martin and sophomore Christopher Roland in the 97th minute of play, but both were knocked away by Newton.
