Undefeated Irish Topple Connecticut for Title

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 1 seeded and undefeated Notre Dame women’s soccer team beat No. 3 seeded Connecticut, 1-0, in overtime on a cold afternoon at soggy Alumni Field to win the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship.
Irish freshman forward Melissa Henderson scored the golden goal with 3:02 left in the first overtime to give Notre Dame its 10th BIG EAST title. It was the first overtime gamewinner in the 16-year history of the event.
The Fighting Irish improved to 21-0-0 on the year, while the Huskies finished their season at 7-9-6.
Henderson was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
UConn senior goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe tied her career high with 13 saves, including seven in the second half. She also had 13 stops against the Irish at home on Oct. 19, 2008.
Connecticut tallied 13 shots, but just two on goal, while the Irish mustered 29 shots, including 15 on goal. It also was a physical contest with 14 fouls whistled against Notre Dame and 11 against Connecticut.
Notre Dame seniors Kerri Hanks and Brittany Bock did not play in the contest. The two had combined for 67 points (24 goals and 19 assists) on the season.
