November 14, 2007
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The University of New Haven accepted an offer to join the Northeast-10 Conference as a full-time member beginning the 2008-09 academic year.
New Haven will compete as a member of the Division II Northeast-10 in all the sports it currently sponsors, except men's volleyball, beginning in the fall of 2008. The Chargers currently field 17 varsity athletic teams, including men’s and women’s soccer.
“I would like to welcome the University of New Haven into the Northeast-10 Conference,” said Dr. George Hagerty, Chair of the NE-10 Council of Presidents. “New Haven brings a positive balance in their campus community and a strong athletic history to our league. They will have an immediate impact in the Northeast-10.”
It’s the first time the Northeast-10 has added a member since Franklin Pierce, UMass Lowell, Southern Connecticut, Southern New Hampshire and Saint Rose joined the NE-10 for the start of the 2000-01 academic year.
“This is a historic day for the Northeast-10,” said Interim Commissioner Paula Sullivan. “With the addition of New Haven, the NE-10 continues to grow to be one of the most competitive NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. “
Full Members of the Northeast-10 include American International College, Assumption College, Bentley College, Bryant University, Franklin Pierce University, Le Moyne College, The University of Massachusetts Lowell, Merrimack College, Pace University, Saint Anselm College, Saint Michael’s College, The College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University, Southern New Hampshire University, and Stonehill College.
The Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation and sponsors the most championships of any Division II conference.
