New England Schools Dominate Ivy League Awards

Brown Leads Way With Five on First-Team

November 21, 2007

Three New England schools nearly swept All-Ivy First-Team honors, placing 11 of 12 players on the league’s top squad, voted by the league’s head coaches.

The one-loss Brown University men’s soccer team dominated the Ivy League’s end-of-year honors, sweeping the Player and Rookie of the Year awards and placing five on the All-Ivy First Team.

Senior defender Matt Britner was named the League's Player of the Year, while freshman goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand received Rookie of the Year honors. Britner was joined on the all-league First Team by midfielder Nick Elenz-Martin, forwards, Kevin Davies and Dylan Sheehan and defender Rhett Bernstein. Grandstrand received a second-team nod.

Brown, which holds the nation’s best record at 15-1-1, went undefeated in Ivy League play this season, going 7-0-0.

Harvard placed three players on the First Team, a testament to the Crimson’s high-powered offense. Forwards Michael Fucito and Andre Akpan and midfielder Matt Hoff all made the squad.

Dartmouth rounded out the team with defender Ale Frischeisen and goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.).

Player of the Year, Britner was a commanding presence on a defensive unit that surrendered only 14 goals in 16 regular season games this year. Freshman Grandstrand began his meteoric rise in the seventh game of the season and has been nothing short of spectacular, sporting a 10-0-1 record en route to the league’s top rookie honor.

Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard were selected to compete in the 2007 NCAA Championships and all will host games in the tournament. Brown has selected as the No. 6 overall seed in the tournament and will await the winner of Providence and Old Dominion on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 pm.

Dartmouth will entertain America East champion Vermont and Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State travels to Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 24.
