Revs Get Ready for Familiar Opponent

April 14, 2009

Following the results around Major League Soccer this past weekend, the New England Revolution is now one of just three teams remaining in the league without a loss in 2009.

Five teams entered the weekend unbeaten, but both D.C. United and Seattle Sounders FC tasted defeat for the first time this season - and in Seattle's case, for the first time ever.

Now four weeks into the MLS season, only Chivas USA (3-0-1, 10 points), Chicago (2-0-2, 8 points) and New England (2-0-1, 7 points) remain unbeaten.

Rested and ready to go
The Revs will be eager to return to the field when they visit D.C. United on Friday night, as the players will have had 12 days off since their most recent match against FC Dallas.

While the other 14 teams in the league all took the field Saturday, the Revolution had a bye week and a much-needed chance to recover from a rash of injuries. Although teams typically don't prefer time off early in the season, with 10 players listed on the most recent injury report Friday, the timing of the Revolution's bye couldn't have been much better.

RFK Stadium not kind to the Revs
The Revolution has not enjoyed many previous trips to the nation's capital, as the club is just 6-16-3 all-time in regular-season matches at RFK Stadium. Not only have the Revs struggled to earn results in D.C., but the defense has been shaky, allowing an average of 2.00 goals per game in regular-season matches (50 goals in 25 games).

The Revolution is 0-2-1 in its last three regular-season visits to RFK Stadium and hasn't earned a point since April 19, 2007 (a 1-1 draw). Meanwhile, New England's last regular-season win in D.C. came on Oct. 7, 2006 (2-1).

The Revs did, however, win the 2006 Eastern Conference Championship with a 1-0 win at RFK Stadium on Nov. 5, 2006.

Familiar foes renew rivalry
After facing each other four times in all competitions in 2008, New England and D.C. will renew their rivalry with their first meeting of 2009. This will mark the 57th all-time meeting between the original MLS clubs in all competitions, representing the greatest total of the games the Revs have played against any opponent

The match will be broadcast in high definition for a national television audience, as it will be ESPN2's MLS Game of the Week.

Revolution viewing party
Throughout the 2009 season, the Revolution will host a series of away game viewing parties at local establishments in New England, and the first event of the series is set for Friday.

The viewing party will take place at McGreevy's (911 Boylston Street, Boston) with coverage of the match set to begin at 7 p.m. There will be no cover charge to enter McGreevy's, and the Rev Girls and team representatives will be on hand with giveaways and prizes for all those in attendance.
