New England Mutiny tie Seacoast United, 1-1

Mutiny lets lead slip in 75th minute for second straight road draw

NEW HAVEN, CT - The New England Mutiny (1-1-2 WPSL East-Northeast) once again tied another Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) newcomer, the Connecticut Passion (2-0-1 WPSL East-Northeast), 1-1.

Just like their match at Seacoast last weekend, the visitors would rack up the advantage in shots taken by a 4-1 margin, but it would take until the 65th minute for New England to get on the scoreboard. A Jenny Maurer shot would ring off the right post and go directly to Mary-Frances Monroe, who one-timed the ricochet into the net for her team-leading third goal of the 2010 season.

Except for their seven-goal explosion against Maine, the Mutiny offense has only scored three in three matches while the defense has held firm, allowing four goals over the team's 1-1-2 start to 2010. It was slated to be tough going once again for the visitors' offense, as they had to do without not only Sarah Brochu (tied for the team’s lead in goals), but three other options up top in UConn's Meghan Cunningham (red card suspension), local star Brittany Barry and former University of Rhode Island standout Deb Nelson in this game.

It was perfect timing for the first shutout of the season for the New England defense but it would turn out not to be. In the 75th minute, a low cross from the right flank by Connecticut's Chrissy Lozier found their leading scorer Kelly Scalora (four goals), who clinically one-timed her shot past Mutiny goalkeeper Jackie Fede to make the final 1-1 score.

Next up for New England is their home debut at Chicopee Comprehensive High School on Sunday, June at 5:00 p.m. in a Northeast Division match vs. Seacoast United. After that, the Mutiny will face their toughest road test of the season as they travel to Endicott College to take on the reserve team of the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) - Boston Aztec.
