Mutiny, Reds Dominate WPSL East Team

DiCicco, Monroe Earn Yearly Awards

July 26, 2008

The SoccerPlus Reds and New England Mutiny were the best teams in the WPSL’s East region for the majority of the season. Now they’re being rewarded for it.

Before the two sides kicked off their respective playoff matches Friday night, they learned that they placed nearly half of the 12 players selected for the WPSL All-East First Team, with SoccerPlus having three representatives and the Mutiny coming in with two.

The two teams also captured two of the biggest honors of the season, with Reds’ coach Tony DiCicco earning the east’s Coach of the Year and the Mutiny’s Mary-Frances Monroe being named the East’s Player of the Year.

DiCicco was named Coach of the Year while Katie Schoepfer, Tiffany Weimer and Manya Makoski were named to the First Team and Niki Cross to the Second Team.

Monroe, the WPSL's leading scorer (16 goals, 11 assists), was named East Player of the Year while teammate Jenny Maurer (First Team) and Meghan Schnur (Second Team) were also honored.

Atlantic City's backstop Megan Walker was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

Long Island joined SoccerPlus CT with four selections to the All-East Teams - leading scorer Jasmyne Spencer (7 goals) and BC standouts Kelly Henderson & Hannah Cerrone were named to the First Team.

The Boston Aztecs and Maine Tide chipped in with a player each on the Second Team, as the league recognized Aztecs forward Rebekah Splaine and Maine goalkeeper Vanessa Peters.
