Wheelock women get first win; Johnson State sweeps Paul Smith's College
September 9, 2008
Kim Rodgers (Derby, Conn.) and Lindsay LaCourse (Scarborough, Maine) each scored a goal while keeper Victoria Fernandes (Randolph, Mass.) notched her first shutout of the season in the Wheelock College women’s soccer team’s 2-0 win over Regis at Pine Manor College Monday afternoon.
Rodgers broke a scoreless game just under nine minutes into the second half when her shot bounced off a Regis defender and found its way to the net. LaCourse added the second goal of the game and her first on the season with a little over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Meanwhile, Fernandes recorded five saves to help insure the Wildcat win.
Wheelock moves to 1-1 on the season and will next host the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Winsor Field in Boston.

The Johnson (Vt.) State men’s soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Paul Smith’s College Monday night. It was the Badgers’ home-opener at Minaert Field.
Freshman Emil Albright (Romania/Rochester) put the Badgers on the board when he took a pass lofted by junior Christopher Keefer (Montague, N.J./Lycoming) and knocked it past Paul Smith keeper Codie Marsh just after the six-minute mark.
John Sabau (Romania/Rochester) gave JSC some breathing room in the 49th minute when he drilled home a free kick from just outside the penalty area. It was Sabau’s second goal of the young season. Freshman Ryan Demars (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples Academy) gave the Badgers a 3-0 lead in the 69th minute with his first collegiate goal.
PSC (0-1) would make it interesting when Dillon Calderone headed home a corner kick by Andrew Sorci in the 73rd minute. The Bobcats would score again with seven seconds remaining when Jeffery Langschwager floated a direct kick high into the air from about 25 yards out that squirted through the hands of Badger keeper Kegan Pettit (South Freeport, Maine/Freeport).
Andrew Lane (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) made two first half saves for the Badgers while Pettit made two stops of his own in the second half. Marsh turned away three Johnson State shots in the loss for the Bobcats.
Johnson State will host the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Johnson State women’s team, meanwhile, earned its first win of the season with a 5-0 decision over visiting Paul Smith’s College on Minaert Field Monday. The Badgers scored a pair of goals in the first half and netted a trio in the second to move to 1-2 on the season.
Sophomore Samantha Cutting (Rochester, Vt./Rochester) took a nice cross from Kathryn Johnson (Hyde Park, Vt./Lamoille Union) and redirected it past Paul Smith (0-1) keeper Karlie Zurmuhlen in the ninth minute to get the Badgers rolling. Cutting would finish with a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the JSC offense, while Juliet Jacovini (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples Academy) tallied a goal and an assist and Johnson recorded a pair of assists on the day.
Heather Bedard (Ferrisburgh, Vt./Vergennes) and Emily Sullivan (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each scored goals and senior Grace Albert-Gardner (Florence, Mass./Northampton) had an assist to round out the Badgers’ score sheet.
Freshman keeper Elizabeth Wallace (Port Henry, N.Y./Moriah Central) made six saves for Johnson State to earn her first career shutout. Zurmuhlen made 11 stops for the Bobcats.
The Badgers will host Norwich University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
