Farrell McClernon scored the game winner for the Terriers. (BU Athletics) |
The Terriers (5-5-0) recorded 20 shots - a season high - and held the Bears (2-3-2) to two, while nine different Terriers recorded at least one shot. Brown goalkeeper Brenna Hogue was forced to make nine saves.
The game-winner came at 76:17 when Herman sent a long cross into the six-yard box and McClernon, who was waiting inside the area, headed it home to the far right side. It was McClernon’s second goal of the 2008 campaign and Herman’s third point.
BU came out of the gates aggressively, forcing play into the offensive end and recording two quick shots on goal. Throughout the first 15 minutes of play the Terriers continued to dominate possession, stringing together a series of short passes through the midfield as well as long crosses to change fields. Midway through the first half, BU upped its offense and began to pepper the Bears’ backline with a succession of shots.
At 26:32, junior Casey Brown had a golden opportunity with a point-blank strike on goal; however, the Bears’ Brenna Hogue was there for the diving kick save. BU ended the first stanza with 13 shots, seven of which were on goal, and held Brown without a shot.
The second half started a bit slower than the first did as Brown picked up its offensive pressure, but after 15 minutes BU settled in and began to gain more possession. Brown’s best chance in the second half came on a corner kick as Sylvia Stone sent a long ball into the six-yard box, but Reilly came off her line and with a crowd surrounding her made the save.
