Major Mass. Clubs Merge

NE Eagles and Puma FC Joining Together

May 15, 2009

Two longtime Massachusetts youth clubs are merging. This week, New England Eagles FC and FC PUMA agreed to merge and will take the new name New England FC (NEFC).

The merger will officially begin June 8.

NEFC is also pleased to announce that in addition to the current Youth Academy (U6-U10 players) in central Massachusetts we are expanding into the greater metro-west area and the South Shore of Massachusetts.

NEFC will be the largest premier youth soccer club in New England with over 700 players and more than 40 boys and girls teams U10-U19, with multiple teams in almost every age category. This means that soccer players aged 6-19 will be able to develop under one roof with a distinguished coaching staff and quality training facilities.

This powerful merger creates an exciting time for both organizations and competitive players in the area, said Ed Kelly, Coaching Coordinator of Boys coaching for the New England Eagles FC and also the head mens coach at Boston College. This merger is designed with the best interests of the game and the players. NEFC will have the most prestigious coaching staff in the region, with over 30 professional/college coaches.

With the merger the club will have a greater geographic reach with training facilities in Berlin, Braintree, Hudson, Marlboro, Millis, Norfolk, & Northboro. NEFC will train throughout metro-west and central Massachusetts, which will allow for convenient accessibility for the serious soccer player.

This merger is an opportunity for two well established soccer clubs to join together to create something special, said Dave Teggart, President of FC PUMA. By combining the professional coaches, quality teams, and state of the art indoor and outdoor training facilities NEFC will change the landscape of premier soccer in New England. It was natural that we would look beyond being competitors to becoming partners.

NEFC will also have an extensive youth academy program for players aged 6 to 10 run by former professional and college coaches.

The New England Eagles FC was founded in 1992 as Tri-Valley United, TVU. In 2002, the club merged with the Eagles and changed its name to The Tri-Valley Eagles, TVE. In 2006, TVE merged once again with Spirit of Massachusetts and for the last three years has been named the New England Eagles FC. The New England Eagles FC has grown to over 25 teams with over 120 players in the youth academy program.

Teggart and the current Vice President of Soccer Operations Paul Whittier founded FC Puma 11 years ago. Since its founding FC PUMA has grown to 17 boys and girls Maple teams competing in the age group U10-U18. Teggart will assume the role of VP on the NEFC Board.

With over 40 competitive Region 1, Sub-region 1 & Maple teams, professional coaching, state of the art facilities, and a well integrated youth academy program in three geographic areas NEFC provides a challenging soccer environment where players can grow and succeed, said Brian Mazar, President of NEFC.
