Maine Maritime, Johnson State split

Lane records shutout for JSC men; Manatt-Rogers bags brace for MMA women

September 28, 2008

The Johnson State (Vt.) College men’s soccer team moved to 6-3 overall on the season, and 2-0 in North Atlantic Conference play, with a 1-0 shutout of visiting Maine Maritime Academy Saturday.

The game was an evenly played, physical match until the 65th minute when Emil Albright (Romania/Lamoille Union) crossed a pass into the box, where Ryan Demars (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples Academy) collected it and blasted it past MMA (2-5, 0-2 NAC) keeper Jeff Butland (Cumberland, Maine) for the game’s only score.

Johnson State out-shot the Mariners on the day, 13-4, but needed a diving, two-handed save from keeper Andy Lane (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) late in the game to preserve the shutout victory.

Lane made four stops on the day while Butland turned away five shots for Maine Maritime.

Johnson State will be on the pitch again on Sunday, hosting NAC foe in Husson University at noon, while MMA travels east to play Lyndon State College, also at noon.

On the women’s side, Maine Maritime Academy received a pair of goals from Diana Manatt-Rogers (Conway, Mass.) and a strong defensive effort to shutout Johnson State College Saturday, 2-0.

Manatt-Rogers struck first in the 41st minute when a long pass over the JSC (3-6, 0-2 NAC) defense drew out keeper Elizabeth Wallace (Port Henry, N.Y./Moriah Central) and she out-muscled a pair of Johnson State defenders to win the ball and put it in the open net.

MMA (4-5-1, 1-1 NAC) would put the game out of reach in the 78th minute when Katie Hutchinson (Dixfield, Maine) beat a Johnson State defender to the outside to bring out the JSC sweeper, leaving Manatt-Rogers open and available in the center of the pitch. Hutchinson put a pass on the feet that Manatt-Rogers easily converted past Wallace for the 2-0 lead.

Wallace made five saves on the day for the Badgers while MMA goalie Lacey Jackson (York, Penn.) made three stops to earn the shutout.

Johnson State plays again on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Husson University while Maine Maritime will play at Lyndon State College, also on Sunday at 2 p.m.
