Four With New England Ties Expected to Excel This Fall

August 12, 2009

Harvard senior forward Andre Akpan, UMass junior midfielder Ben Arikian, UConn senior midfielder Toni Stahl and Monmouth junior midfielder Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, Conn.) have been named to the 2009 Missouri Athletic Clubs Hermann Trophy Watch List, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Tuesday.

They are four of the 38 players on the list for college soccers most prestigious honor.

Akpan, a co-captain of the Crimson, was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy for the second consecutive season in 2008 after accumulating an Ivy League-best 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. Last fall, he was tabbed unanimously to the All-Ivy League first team and garnered NSCAA All-America honors for the third year in a row. He also grabbed his third straight NSCAA All-Northeast Region first-team nod.

The National Rookie of the Year as named by Top Drawer Soccer and Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2005, Akpan ranks as Harvards all-time leading scorer with 97 points, netting 35 goals and handing out 27 assists over the first three years of his career. Akpans 27 career assists also stands as a Crimson record, while he appears third on the all-time goal list.

Arikian is the reigning Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year and a 2009 preseason All-American,

This is a great honor for Ben and for our program to have a one of our players earn this national recognition, said Minutemen head coach Sam Koch. Ben has one of the best work ethics I've seen; he never quits and in his two years here he has flat out work his tail off.

Arikian led the Minutemen in points (15) and assists (seven), while his assist total ranked third in the A-10 last season. He contributed four goals on the year and scored or assisted the game-winning goal in eight of Massachusetts' 10 wins. He was a 2008 All-Conference first-team honoree and named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region first-team by the NSCAA.

Arikians time at UMass has coincided with two of the programs best seasons in its 76-year history. In that span, UMass has posted a 27-16-4 overall record, made two NCAA Tournament appearances, were NCAA national semifinalists in 2007, won the 2007 Atlantic 10 tournament and won the 2008 A-10 regular season title.

Stahl is one of two Big East selections to make the list of preseason candidates after the Huskies went 11-5-6 last season, while advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Stahl, who was recently named to the 2009 College Soccer News Preseason All-America Second Team, recorded four points in 2008 on one goal and two assists. He led the Huskies as a dominant presence in the midfield, while making 20 starts and earning All-Big East First Team honors as a unanimous selection.

Last season, Kinne was the sparkplug to Monmouths offense, tying for the team lead with 10 goals and dishing out a team-best six assists. He was named to the All-Northeast Conference First Team as a sophomore, while also being named to the All-Northeast Region First Team by the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I All-North Atlantic Region. He ranked in the top-10 in the league in nine different offensive categories a season ago.

As a senior at Naugatuck High School in 2006, Kinne was named NSCAA Connecticut State Player of the Year.

Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipients of the MAC's Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. They will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 8, 2010, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
