Local Men's Players Recognized
Conference Awards from Around New England
September 16, 2008
Big weekends for local men’s soccer programs translated into a slew of conference weekly honors for New England players.
In New Hampshire, Dartmouth men's soccer players continue to receive league and national attention after taking the Nike/Hypertherm Classic title with a 2-0 weekend.
Freshman forward Lucky Mkosana has earned his second-straight Ivy League Rookie of the Week award after scoring three goals and both game-winners on the weekend. He was named the Nike/Hypertherm Classic Offensive MVP for his role in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and Colgate.
On Friday night he provided the game-winner with a highlight reel goal in the 3-1 triumph over FDU. Mkosana beat the entire FDU defense, faking out four defenders and finishing with a sliding shot over the keeper's head. On Sunday he scored both Dartmouth goals in a hard-fought 2-0 win over Colgate.
In Cambridge, Boston University's Tom Strackhouse was named America East men's soccer Player of the Week after scoring a pair of goals last week.
Strackhouse, a junior midfielder, scored two goals just 65 seconds apart in the Terriers 4-0 win over Rhode Island on Sunday. It was the first multi-goal game of his career and just the third in America East this season. The win was the first of the season for Boston U., which went 0-3-1 in its first four contests, all against nationally ranked-opponents.
And out of the Big East offices in Providence, Rhode Island, Oscar Castillo was named the Big East Defender of the Week for his role in the University of Connecticut’s fourth shutout of the season.
Castillo and the Huskies earned their fourth blanking with a 0-0 tie at No. 11/12 St. Louis on Sept. 13. In front of a crowd of 2,262 fans, Castillo and the backline limited the Billikens to just four shots on goal in 110:00 of play. St. Louis had been averaging 2.75 goals per game this season.
