Late goals propel URI women over Vermont
Lischke, Helldoerfer tallies give Rams the victory
September 18, 2008
A pair of late goals in the final 20 minutes put the University of Rhode Island women’s soccer team past visiting Vermont, 2-0, Wednesday night at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Adrienne Ruhe Lischke was able to convert a cross from teammate Erese Fair and touch the ball past UVM keeper Eliza Bradley in the 70th minute.
Senior Sarah Helldoerfer added an insurance goal in the 84th minute to give URI the 2-0 victory.
"It was an incredible game," said Vermont head coach Kwame Lloyd. "I am disappointed in the result, but not at all disappointed in the players. Eliza did a nice job for us in goal, our back line played well and our front line was creating opportunities for us."
Jackie Fede made two stops for Rhode Island to pick up the victory, while Bradley, who had missed the last two matches due to injury, was credited with 10 stops (seven in the first half) for the Catamounts.
The Rams held a 22-9 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge over Vermont in corner kicks.
Despite the numbers, and the fact his team fell to 1-7 on the season, Lloyd expressed optimism after the game.
“I am pleased with the progress we are showing,” he said. “Last game we played 70 minutes of good soccer, tonight we played 80 so we are inching closer to putting a full 90 minutes together. The players’ confidence is growing as they can see and feel the progress we are making as a team. We are anxious to come home and play on Friday and put it all together.”
The Catamounts will be back in action on Friday when they host Colgate at 4 p.m. at Centennial Field. The Rams, now 3-4-1, will try to get to the .500 mark when they host Manhattan Sunday at 1.
