Late Goal Lifts UVM

Catamounts' Playoff Hopes Kept Alive

October 26, 2007

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- It may have been Senior Day, but it was a sophomore who earned the glory for the Vermont women's soccer team Thursday.

Second-year forward Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt.) scored in the 82nd minute to lift the Catamounts team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Maine.

The win keeps Vermont’s playoff hopes alive as the Catamounts improve to 3-13-1 overall and 2-5-0 in America East. Maine falls to 5-7-3 overall and 3-3-1 in league play.

“This is a great shutout and its great to get three critical points today to keep us in the hunt for a playoff spot,” Vermont coach Kerry Dziczkaniec told UVM Athletics. “This was a total team effort, out defense and Eliza were outstanding and our midfield played very well. This win is a nice send off for our seniors Callie Ewald and Eileen Cirilli.”

The first half was scoreless despite Maine owning a 6-1 advantage in shots. In the 72nd minute UVM freshman Jessica Becker (Woodbridge, Conn.) struck the ball from 20 yards out, but Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips was able to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Becker controlled the ball in the midfield and chipped it over the Maine defense to find Laderoute making a run toward the goal. In stride, Laderoute volleyed the chip on the first touch and sent it past Phillips to give UVM the lead. It was Laderoute’s fifth goal of the season and she has tallied 12 points in the last seven games for the Catamounts.

Maine turned up the pressure in the closing minutes of the contest, but could not get the equalizer. The two best scoring chances late in the game for the Black Bears came a minute apart. In the 84th minute, Kelsey Wilson fired a point blank shot at the goal, but UVM keeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) was there to make the save and the Catamounts were able to clear the ball out to midfield. A minute later Hannah Breton’s strike from six yards out strong, but right at Bradley.

Bradley finished the day with eight saves for Vermont and picked up her second shutout of the season. Phillips was not credited with a save on the afternoon as Maine outshot Vermont 11-4 in the match.
