Lady Pioneers Win Season Opener

Western Mass Tops New York Magic, 1-0

The Western Mass Lady Pioneers won Saturday�s season opener, 1-0, on the road against the New York Magic. Laura Guigli from the University of Hartford scored in 43rd minute on an assist from Kelly Kuss.

Holding much of the play through the first half, the Lady Pioneers were able to maintain quality possession and created scoring chances that just missed the mark. University of Massachusetts standout Therese Smith served as the playmaking midfielder who helped spread the ball around to keep the New York Magic on their heels.

During the second half, the Magic pushed upfield and pressured the defense of the Lady Pioneers. But Brook Johns, a returning player for the Lady Pioneers for the past three years, stood strong and anchored the defense, alongside Ashley O�Brien (UConn), Karen Ray and rookie defender Taylor Hartman of Agawam, Mass.

The quality play of the Lady Pioneers on both sides of the ball ensured Lauren Luckey of UMass the chance to record the clean sheet. The win is an important first step for the Lady Pioneers as they look to continue the success they found at the tail end of last season.

The Lady Pioneers� next test will come when Hudson Valley Quick Strike FC visit Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, Mass. this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It�s �Soccer Mom Appreciation Night� in which the Pioneers recognize the dedication of your special Soccer Mom, as they get in for free.

The Lady Pioneers will take this opportunity to thank all those Soccer Moms whose personal commitment of time and energy has ensured the growth of the sport. Celebrate with the Pioneers at halftime as they recognize their Soccer Moms with a parade to midfield.

�The Happy Face Painter� will be in attendance to provide free face painting for all kids. Join in on the halftime contests and win prizes of gift certificates and awards, then take the chance to meet the Lady Pioneers for autographs and pictures after the game.
