Smith, who was swapped for allocation money, will fill the void on the left midfield left by Dave van den Bergh, who New York jettisoned to FC Dallas in January.

Smith spent four seasons with the Revs before he was plucked by the Sounders in November’s MLS Expansion Draft. He made 85 appearances with 54 starts for the Revolution, scoring eight goals and 11 assists in regular-season action.

Smith also made 10 postseason appearances with four starts, and was a member of the New England team that played in the MLS Cup championship match in three straight seasons (2005-07). He dealt his new club a serious blow in 2005 when he scored the series-winning goal against New York Eastern Conference Semifinal Series, capping the Revolution’s comeback from a two-goal deficit.

"One of our priorities before the start of the season was to add depth and athleticism to the left side of our midfield and we feel that we have accomplished this goal by acquiring Khano," Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said in a statement released by the club. "We think that Khano's pace, athleticism and experience will immediately help our club as we enter the new MLS season."
