Indoor Soccer in New England
Indoor soccer makes up an important part of the sport’s landscape in New England due to the simple fact that year-round soccer is impossible in the six New England states without the option of indoor play.
Some coaches hate the indoor game, seeing it as an inferior version of the “real” 11-a-side outdoor game, while others embrace it as a great chance to work on various aspects of the game when their teams would otherwise be unable to play at all.
For its part, the indoor game in New England has come a long way since the days of inflatable bubbles that seemed to collapse every time there was a show storm. The average indoor soccer center is now far more likely to be a building structure that offers multiple sports and a year-round business for its operators. Many also allow for larger field sizes, including one, Rising Stars in Bedford, NH, that allows for indoor 11-a-side play.
It is now not uncommon to find very high-level players competing in indoor leagues and tournaments all across the region. And some of the region’s premier youth clubs, most notably Oakwood and South Shore Select, can trace their earliest roots back to the indoor game.
We even have a senior men’s indoor league, the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) that pits men’s teams from the region in what might be described as an indoor version of the USL. The league has a New England division, though currently only two of the division’s four teams are actually from New England.
More recently, we have seen the emergence of futsal, the FIFA sanctioned version of the indoor game that does not use dasher boards, and pits 5v5 teams on a field about the size of a basketball court. This version of the game is very popular in Brazil, and places a high premium on technical skill and speed of play.
There are dozens of indoor facilities all across New England, and Soccer New England has covered the indoor scene more extensively than anyone else. So this is the part of the site that focuses on the indoor version of the game throughout New England.
