Shelby Stand's Brace Leads Crusaders Over Manhattan

Riverdale, N.Y. Senior co-captain Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored two goals in her season debut to lead the Holy Cross womens soccer team to victory, 2-1, over Manhattan College Friday night. With the win, the Crusaders remain undefeated and improve to 2-0 overall, while the Jaspers fall to 1-2 on the season.
Stand got the Crusaders going early in the game with a goal at the 7:07 mark, assisted by sophomore Katherine Donnelly (Londonderry, N.H.). Despite being outshot by Manhattan 6-4, Holy Cross controlled the game and held on to the 1-0 lead to close out the first half.
Stand and Donnelly hooked up again at the 76:36 mark in the second half with Stand scoring her second goal of the game, assisted by Donnelly. Manhattan mounted a comeback attempt, scoring at the 89:49 mark, but could not come any closer as Holy Cross won, 2-1.
Junior keeper Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) made her first start of the season in net for Holy Cross, recording two saves and allowing one goal. Manhattan keepers Kara Davis and Caitlin Trupiano shared duties for the Jaspers, each allowing a goal. Manhattan outshot Holy Cross, 19-5.
The Crusaders continue action on the road, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on the Eagles of Boston College (5-0 winners over Brown Friday) Sunday at 1 p.m.
