Colgate Wins Patriot League Championship
November 17, 2008
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men’s soccer team lost the Patriot League Championship, 2-1, to Colgate on a late header Sunday afternoon at Van Doren Field.
Senior defender Jerry Dickinson scored late in the first half but it wasn’t enough for the Crusaders, who surrendered the decisive tally with 11 minutes left in the game.
Colgate got on the board early when with six minutes into the first half, the Raiders’ Matt Leach crossed the ball to Alex Weekes, making a quick touch in the far right corner for the 1-0 lead.
With less than eight minutes left in the half, at the 37:31 mark, Dickinson scored on his own rebound after his initial shot was saved by Colgate’s David Cappuccio, making the score 1-1 before the break.
Just under 11 minutes remaining in the game, a free kick by Jeff Leach set up a header by Weekes, securing a 2-1 victory for the Raiders.
Junior goalkeeper Thomas Booth made five saves for Holy Cross while Cappuccio had three stops.
The Crusaders end their 2008 season at 9-5-5 and 4-2-2 in the Patriot League.
