Hartford Notches 1-0 Win Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - In a rain-soaked game one of the UMass Classic, visiting Hartford scored 28 seconds into the second overtime period to pull off a 1-0 win over the UMass men's soccer team.
Hawks leading scorer Carlos Villa tallied his ninth goal of the season in the win, upping the Hawks to 4-2-2 overall, while UMass falls to 2-4-1 on the season.
Neither UMass or Hartford could find the back of the net in regulation or the first period of overtime although each team had several chances. Hawks keeper Nenad Cudic made four saves, each of which were in dangerous situations. He left the game in the 76th minute with an injury and was replaced by Luke Citriniti who earned his first win of the season.
UMass keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) made four saves in the loss.
Villa scored from eight yards out shooting from the left post to the right center of the net. He took a short cross from Sam Groves that Simmons tried to intercept. The ball was misplayed an Villa was able to hit the game-winning goal at the 100:28 mark to end the match.
In the second game of the UMass Classic, Vermont and Rhode Island played to a 0-0 tie with the game being called in the 70th minute due to darkness.
The weekend tournament returns to action Sunday when Hartford faces Rhode Island at 2 p.m., and UMass takes on Vermont at 2 p.m.
