Hartford forward Carlos Villa scored Tuesday. (Hartford Athletics) |
“Tonight was a demonstration of two in-state rivals, and these games are battles,” said Hartford head coach Dan Gaspar. “I think the draw was a fair result and we are looking to keep the tradition of the derby.”
Junior forward Carlos Villa put the Hawks out in front early with a goal from the left side that went through the legs of Blue Devil’s goalkeeper Paul Armstrong in the ninth minute. Villa’s team-leading third goal of the season was assisted on the play by freshman Patrick Boucher, his second assist of the season.
Central Connecticut responded in the 38th minute as forward Christopher Brown squeaked a ball through Hartford’s keeper Nenad Cudic to knot the game up at one. It was Brown’s second goal of the season with the assist coming from defensemen Mersad Sahanic. The game remained knotted 1-1 going into the halftime break.
Both squads remained scoreless through the second half. In the 62nd minute the Blue Devils would be forced to play a man down the rest of the way after a red card to Player of the Week, Yan Klukowski.
Neither team could tally the game-winning goal in overtime, as both goalies stood their ground and left the game in a 1-1 tie. Each team tallied eight shots in the game.
