Good Weekend for Voltage
Vermont Enjoys Two Wins
July 6, 2008
The Vermont Voltage men celebrated Independence Day weekend by winning back-to-back matches – an exhibition Friday and a real PDL game on Saturday.
At their home field at Collins-Perley on Saturday night, the Voltage overpowered the Westchester Flames, 2-1, for their fourth win in five games.
Vermont first struck in the 26th minute of the match by a through ball given by veteran Darko Kolic to running on forward Matt Stedman, who beat two defenders to finally slide the ball home.
The match remained fairly even until some Voltage substitutions made late in the game energized and created a number of offensive opportunities. In the 81st minute, forward A.J. Konchar slipped the ball across the eighteen to forward Nassim Berhouni for another Voltage goal.
A goal in the 90th minute by Westchester stole the shutout, but Vermont still improved to 5-6-1 on the season. Goalkeeper John Stubbins made four saves in the win.
In the friendly away game on the 4th, the Voltage defeated Manchester United, 1-0.
