Friars Defeat Holy Cross

Providence Improves to 3-0 on Year

September 5, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I.¬ – The Providence College women’s soccer team remained undefeated after downing Holy Cross, 3-0, Thursday night at Glay Field.

The Friars benefitted from an own goal early, and then tacked on two of their own to improve to 3-0 on the season. Holy Cross goalkeeper Jessica Stone made seven saves for the Crusaders (0-3) but it was not enough to stop the Friars’ onslaught.

The Friars gained a 1-0 advantage at the 22:35 mark with an own goal, putting the Crusaders at an early disadvantage. With less than five minutes left in the first period, at the 41:31 mark, Providence scored again when senior Christie Gent sent a corner kick directly into the middle of the Crusader’s goal box. Providence’s Jill Camburn tipped the ball to freshman midfielder Courtney Collins, who lobbed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Barely two minutes into the second half, Providence took a 3-0 lead when sophomore Kate DelCiampo sent a crossing pass to the right side of the goal box. Senior Kelly Peterson perfectly controlled the pass and launched it past Stone to score the final goal for the Friars.

Providence goal keeper Jill Schott made three saves for the Friars to earn her second straight shutout.
