Franklin Pierce women cruise past St. Anselm
Johnson, Smith score first goals of the year in 4-0 victory
October 2, 2008
Franklin Pierce University scored three times in the first 30 minutes and never looked back in a 4-0 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 women’s soccer action Wednesay night.
Seniors Kristen Cilley (Belchertown, Mass.) and Kelly Johnson (Stamford, Conn.) each registered a goal and assist to lead Franklin Pierce to a bounce back victory in its first match since a 1-0 setback to Saint Michael’s College last Tuesday.
Junior All-American Gabriela Demoner dished out two assists for the Ravens, who scored all four goals in the opening half, while classmate Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H.) and sophomore All-American Angelika Johansson each netted a goal.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Ester made one second-half save to preserve her second shutout of the season and 15th career of her career. Senior Micaela Smith (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) split the goalkeeping duties for Saint Anselm, with Cooney making two saves in the first half and Smith stopping two shots in a scoreless second.
Franklin Pierce finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots for the match, including an 8-0 margin in the opening half.
Johnson put Franklin Pierce in front just 2:54 into the match as she took a through ball from Demoner and fired a bending shot from the right side of the box into the net from 14 yards out for her first goal of the season. The Ravens doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Cooney stopped a long-range shot from the right side by Cilley, but couldn’t hang on and the rebound dropped to the foot of Smith, who tapped it in from inside the six for her first goal of the year.
Franklin Pierce’s lead grew to three goals with a nice three-way play in the 28th minute as Demoner released Johnson down the right side with a through ball from midfield. Johnson looped a cross into the box for an open tap-in at the far post by Johansson for her conference-leading 12th goal of the fall.
Cilley rounded out the scoring in the 44th minute, when she sent a ball in from just beyond the halfway line that bounced through the Saint Anselm defense, which screened Cooney, allowing the ball to find the net.
Franklin Pierce (6-2-1, 4-1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday, when it travels to Pace University for an NE-10 match at 3 p.m. The Ravens return to Sodexo Field next Tuesday to host UMass Lowell at 6 p.m. Saint Anselm (3-5-2, 2-2-2 NE-10) hosts The College of Saint Rose on Saturday at 2 p.m.
