September 30, 2008
Two members of the defending D-II Champion Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer team swept the Northeast-10 Conference’s weekly men’s soccer awards, announced Monday afternoon.
Freshman Viktor Gonçalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned NE-10 Player of the Week honors, while classmate Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) was named the NE-10’s Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time.
The Franklin Pierce duo also shared the NE-10’s Freshman of the Week award for their part in leading the Ravens to a pair of conference victories last week. It marks the second-straight week Papageorgiou has earned Freshman of the Week honors, and it is the first honor for Gonçalves.
Gonçalves totaled three goals and an assist in Franklin Pierce’s two matches last week, scoring the match-winning goal in both victories. He posted two goals and an assist in the Ravens’ 4-0 win at Saint Michael’s College on Wednesday, before scoring the lone goal in Sunday’s 1-0 triumph over Stonehill College.
Gonçalves leads the Northeast-10 with seven goals in 10 matches played in his first collegiate season for Franklin Pierce.
Papageorgiou averaged 2.5 saves per match without conceding a goal while playing all 180 minutes in the two matches. He made four saves (three in the second half) to preserve Sunday’s 1-0 win over Stonehill after registering a stop in Wednesday’s 4-0 victory at Saint Michael’s.
Papageorgiou has settled into the goalkeeping duties for Franklin Pierce, starting each of the last five matches, and posting a 0.77 goals against average and .733 save percentage with three shutouts in 470 minutes played. He has recorded three straight clean sheets for the Ravens and carries a shutout streak of 351 minutes, 47 seconds into this week’s contests.
Franklin Pierce is unbeaten over its last 20 regular season Northeast-10 matches (17-0-3) dating back to October 2006, and is unbeaten over its last 30 regular season NE-10 contests (27-0-3) at home dating back to October 2003.
Franklin Pierce (5-4-1, 4-0-1 NE-10) is back in action Wednesday when it travels to Manchester, N.H., to face Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 battle at 4 p.m. The Ravens return home Saturday to host Mercy College in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
