First Loss for Harvard Men

No. 6 Crimson Fall to No. 3 Wake Forest

September 27, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 6 Harvard men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 3 Wake Forest in a non-conference matchup.

Austin Harms made one save, while Kwaku Nyamekye fired two shots on net for Harvard, which moves to 6-1 this fall.

The Crimson mustered the only shot on goal in the first half, a kick by Andre Akpan in the eighth minute that Wake Forest goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald grabbed for the save. Nyamekye fired back-to-back shots on goal early in the second half, but Fitzgerald turned both chances aside. The Demon Deacons broke the scoreless tie at 61:29 as Anthony Arena placed the ball inside the left post from six yards out, putting Wake Forest ahead, 1-0.

The Demon Deacons outshot the Crimson, 10-7, but Harvard booted three of the five shots on goal in the contest. Both teams earned five corner kicks each.

The Crimson will open up the Ivy League portion of its schedule with a road contest at archrival Yale Saturday, Oct. 3. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
