Fairfield Women Defeat Holy Cross

Allaway gives Stags seventh straight victory; Crusaders still looking for first win

September 20, 2008

Friday night’s women’s soccer match between Fairfield University and Holy Cross saw two teams continue to head in opposite directions.

The Stags, thanks to game-winning goal from Spenser Allaway in the 68th minute, earned their seventh straight win with a 2-1 victory over the Crusaders. Visiting Holy Cross, meanwhile, fell to 0-7.

Allaway collected a ball from Jasmin Corniel in the corner of the box and put it inside the near post for the 2-1 advantage. The goal came 4:18 after Fairfield’s Chrissie Sidie had tied the game with a header. Casey Frobey crossed the ball from the end line to the opposite side of the box, where Sidie headed it inside the post.

The teams played a scoreless first half, but Crusader freshman Katherine Donnelly changed that quickly after the half.

Less than four minutes into the second period, Donnelly dribbled around the Fairfield defense and launched a shot that rocketed into the bottom corner of the net. It was Donnelly’s second goal of the season and momentarily gave the Crusaders the 1-0 advantage.

Bridget Nerich earned her second win in net for the Stags, making five saves, three in the second half. Her Holy Cross counterpart, Jessica Stone, made 11 saves in the game, nine in the first half.

Fairfield will continue its three-game homestand Sunday as it hosts Connecticut at 1 p.m. At the same day and time, Holy Cross will hope to pick up its first win of the year in Staten Island against Wagner.
