O'Neil's First Sends 'Nova To Loss
September 6, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Greg O’Neil sure picked a good time to score his first collegiate goal.
The Mass. native and BC High product netted the decisive goal in Boston College’s 1-0 win over Villanova, a 79th minute strike from about 20 yards out that improved the Eagles to 2-1-0 on the year.
O’Neil one-timed a bouncing ball with his left foot from outside the 18-yard box past Villanova goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan (two saves) and inside the far post at 78:42, just more than one minute after coming off the bench and into the game.
BC, which will face St. John’s on Sunday, Sept. 7 at noontime at Brown’s Stevenson Field, enjoyed an 11-9 advantage in shots in the match, including a 6-2 edge in the first 45 minutes of action.
Villanova had perhaps its best scoring chance just minutes after O’Neil’s goal. Chris Christian blasted a right-footed kick from 10 yards over the crossbar.
O’Neil’s gamewinner came after numerous second-half scoring opportunities for BC. enior Mike Konicoff settled a cross with his left foot, and then released a curling shot with the inside of his right foot just wide of the far post midway through the half.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Brown registered one save to earn his second victory – and first shutout – of the season (2-1-0). Brown has amassed 21 career wins, ranking fourth on the school’s all-time career wins list.
