Eagles Shock North Carolina

Late Comeback Fuels Huge Win

September 23, 2007

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Down 1-0 late in Saturday?s ACC match against North Carolina, the Boston College men?s soccer team got a goal from Alejandro Bedoya with just over three minutes left in regulation, then waited just 37 seconds in overtime before Mike Konicoff sent the Eagles home with an astounding 2-1 victory over UNC ? a win their head coach called the biggest in program history.

With just more than three minutes left in regulation, Jeremiah Gallington was tackled on the far left side of the field and BC?s Reuben Ayarna lofted a curling, left-footed free kick to the opposite side that Bedoya one-timed with his right foot past North Carolina goalkeeper Tyler Deric for the game-tying score in the 87th minute.

Bedoya and the Eagles continued to pressure UNC in the closing minutes of regulation and wasted very little time in overtime. The junior controlled the ball in North Carolina territory and sent a left-footed through ball to Konicoff, who dribbled once and beat Deric to his left side for the golden goal just 37 seconds into the extra frame.

"Overall, this could be the biggest win in the history of our program," head coach Ed Kelly told BC Athletics. "I am very pleased with the team's effort. We were down, scored with three minutes left and then got a second goal very fast to win the game. I think it really showed what we're made of."

No. 13 Boston College (5-1-0, 2-0-0 ACC) has won four straight, allowing just one goal during this stretch.

That one goal came from UNC's Michael Callahan (23rd minute). But outside of that strike, junior goalkeeper Chris Brown was rock solid, making four saves to capture the win. He recorded a point-blank save on North Carolina's Bill Dworsky with 10 minutes left in the game to keep the score manageable.

For North Carolina (2-2-3, 1-1-0) Deric finished with six saves in the losing effort. . BC will next play Yale in non-conference action Wednesday at Newton Campus Field.
