Eagles Net Two Awards

Players of the Week on Men's and Women's Teams

October 9, 2007

Strong play in victories over Duke earned the Boston College soccer teams some recognition in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s weekly awards.

Eagles’ junior midfielder Alejandro Bedoya earned Co-Player of the Week honors for the men and freshman forward Brooke Knowlton shared the women’s Player of the Week in the ACC.

This is the second time this season Bedoya’s earned the award, which he shared this week with Virginia Tech's Robert Edmans. Bedoya led the No. 6 Eagles to a 4-2 win at No. 4 Duke Friday night, snapping the Blue Devils' four-game winning streak and keeping the Eagles' flawless (4-0) in ACC action. The Weston, Fla., native scored two goals, including the game-winner off a Paul Gerstenberger free kick.

The pair of goals collected on the week mark Bedoya's fifth and sixth of the season, a tally good for fourth among ACC players. The junior leads the league in points (2.11) and shots (5.33) per game. Bedoya has also recorded team-highs for goals (6), assists (7), points (19) and shots (48) over the nine games.

Knowlton shared the women’s honor with North Carolina’s Casey Nogueira. The freshman scored the game-tying goal in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Duke Friday.

On Sunday, Knowlton had more heroics as she notched her second career game-winning goal in BC’s 2-1 victory over No. 25 Wake Forest. Knowlton scored with 10 minutes to play in the match to help the Eagles earn their first ACC victory of the season (1-0-2) and remain unbeaten at 8-0-3.

The Rexford, NY, native now has three goals for six points this season.

The BC women are now ranked 9th in the country by the NSCAA (Oct. 3) and moved up a spot to No. 10 in the latest Soccer America poll. The men, meanwhile, fashion a 7-1-1 overall record and are ranked No. 5 according to the Soccer America poll released Monday, jumping one spot from the previous week.
