BC Advances to First-Ever ACC Semifinal
November 15, 2007
CARY, N.C. – The No. 6 Boston College men’s soccer team used a 64th-minute goal by fullback Jamie Melas to beat Virginia, 1-0, in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinal Wednesday at the SAS Soccer Complex.
The top-seeded Eagles will now face Virginia Tech in the ACC Semifinals Friday at 5:30 p.m.
After 63 minutes of scoreless soccer, BC’s Sherron Manswell one-timed a Ryan Sherman corner kick on net. Virginia goalkeeper Dan Louisignau made the initial save, but in the ensuing scrum, Melas was able to knock home the bouncing loose ball for his first collegiate goal.
In the first half, Boston College posted four shots to the Cavaliers' two, including two each by juniors Reuben Ayarna and Mike Konicoff. Both teams were unable, however, to convert on any scoring chances, and the game's first stanza ended in a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, the Eagles, who defeated the Cavaliers 2-1 in the two teams' only regular season matchup in Charlottesville, Va., came out very aggressively.
Friday's appearance in the semifinals will be the BC’s first-ever in the ACC Tournament. The matchup between BC and Virginia Tech will be the squad's second meeting this season. On Nov. 4, the Eagles defeated the Hokies, ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time, 3-1 in home game at Chestnut Hill.
