Duke Drops BC in OT
Blue Devils Score Winner on First Shot on Goal
October 4, 2008
NEWTON, Mass. – Duke forward Mike Grella broke a scoreless tie in the 102nd minute to lead the Blue Devils to a 1-0 victory over Boston College in ACC soccer action Friday night at the Newton Soccer Complex.
Grella’s goal came on a feed from freshman Temi Molinar and was the first shot on goal in the entire game for coach Jon Kerr’s side.
Duke (6-3-1, 2-1-1 ACC) recorded three shots in the game – one in each of the first two 45-minute halves and Grella’s goal – his ninth of the season – at 101:56.
Boston College attempted a conference high 17 shots, including eight off the foot or head of senior Alejandro Bedoya and three apiece from Shawn Chin and Mario Uribe.
Bedoya had the Eagles’ closest scoring chance in the 90th minute when his strike from 25 yards bounced off the crossbar with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.
Senior fullback Paul Gerstenberger’s direct kick in the 68th minute from 20 yards on the far side was stopped and the rebound smothered by Duke senior goalkeeper Brendan Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald totaled five saves to earn his sixth victory – and fourth shutout – of the season.
The host Eagles (4-4-1, 2-2-0 ACC) attempted eight corner kicks while the Blue Devils recorded seven.
Next, Boston College travels to Fairfield for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
