Dartmouth Women Upset West Virginia

Aly O'Dea Leads Big Green to Big Win

Sept. 13, 2009

Charlottesville, Va. -- Dartmouth sophomore Aly ODea scored the game-winner early in the second half to give the womens soccer team a 1-0 upset win over No. 12 West Virginia Sunday afternoon.

With its win over Seton Hall Friday and over the Mountaineers (2-2-3), Dartmouth (3-1) won the 2009 Nike Virginia Classic Tournament, in a field that also featured the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers. Sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Hogan earned her second-straight shutout win with five saves in goal.

This was a great result against a good team and everyone played her part in a great team performance, said head coach Angie Hind of the win.

Dartmouth had the games first shot on goal when Ally Dutton headed the ball off a corner kick but Kerri Butler made the save for the Mountaineers. West Virginia pressured the Big Green throughout the first half, taking eight shots to Dartmouths four and forcing Hogan to make three saves.

The Big Green entered the second half determined to get a goal and senior Kelsey Quick made sure it happened early. In the 57th minute, Quick made a great, composed run down the right side and passed the ball center to ODea once her defender caught up. ODea had Butler in a one-on-one and beat her to the low left corner for the 1-0 Dartmouth lead.

Dartmouth handled the lead well, ultimately finishing the half even with West Virginia, taking six shots each. The Big Green successfully defended three second-half corners by the Mountaineers and Hogan made two saves in the half to preserve the shutout.

When they came at us [in the second] we dealt with it and defended collectively, said Hind. We kept a lot of possession and had a few scoring chances.

Senior midfielder Myra Sack had an impressive weekend and was named tournament MVP for her efforts. She was joined on the all-tournament team by classmates Quick and Becky Poskin and sophomore back Erin Fleischli. Poskin scored the game-winner against Seton Hall on Friday night.

The Dartmouth women next head west to the Oregon State Classic to face a pair of Pac-10 foes. The Big Green takes on the host Oregon State Friday at 10:00 p.m. EST before playing Oregon Sunday.
