Break Out for Four Tallies in 18 Minutes

May 23, 2008

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — After falling behind, 1-0, in the first 10 minutes of Wednesday’s game with the Rhode Island Stingrays, the Cape Cod Crusaders struck for four goals within 18 minutes to capture a 4-1 victory and stay in contention for a US Open Cup berth.

Stingrays striker Jeff Gonsalves put Rhode Island ahead, 1-0, in the 10th minute off a Cape Cod turnover, but Chris Banks (two goals), Yan Klukowski, Liam Maloney scored goals ranging from the 20th minute to the 38th, giving Cape Cod (2-1-0) a commanding lead.

With the big second-half advantage, Crusaders coach Paul Baber made a series of substitutions to keep his squad fresh for Friday’s match with the Vermont Voltage.

"We could have had a couple more (goals)," Baber told The Cape Cod Times. "We had a couple of fast chances. It was just pleasing to get to play some different players, rotate it and rest a few legs."
