Crusaders Beat Phantoms

Cape Cod Over New Hampshire, 2-0

June 20, 2008

A goal in each half was enough to lead the MPS Cape Cod Crusaders to a 2-0 victory over the New Hampshire Phantoms in a clash of the top two in the PDL Eastern Conference New England Division.

Liam Maloney gave the visitors a dream start in the second minute of the game, while Graham Munro added an insurance goal late in the second half to secure the points for coach Paul Baber's side.

"We are delighted to pick up three points in what is probably our best performance of the season," said Baber. "We scored two fantastic goals and played some fantastic soccer throughout the duration of the game."

The Crusaders struck as early as the second minute after some fine creativity from Edens Chery. The former UMass Lowell midfielder skipped past his marker and sent a measured cross into the path of Maloney. The English native showed fine composure to steer the ball into the corner of the net with his left foot.

The Crusaders had several opportunities to double their lead before the interval. Midfield dynamo Jason Massie sent a ball just past the post after some more fine work from Chery and forward Chris Wright forced two fantastic saves from the Phantoms keeper before the interval.

The decisive goal arrived in the 75th minute of play when Joel Theissen sent a measured free kick onto the head of Graham Munro who dispatched the ball from 12 yards out.

"We scored two excellent goals and created many chances," said Baber. "Chris Wright had another excellent game and has hit form at the right time as we enter a very important stage of the season."
