Crimson Nearly Sweep Weeklies
Harvard Takes Three of Four Awards
October 21, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men’s soccer team nearly swept the Ivy League weekly awards, earning three of the four honors announced Monday.
Women’s freshman forward Melanie Baskind was selected the Ivy League Rookie of the Week while men’s senior Michael Fucito pulled down Player of the Week accolades and freshman goalkeeper Austin Harms collected the Rookie of the Week.
Fucito and Harms contributed mightily in the Crimson’s 4-1 victory at No. 24 Brown Saturday evening. Fucito scored a goal and collected an assist, while Harms made five saves for his third win in a row.
A co-captain of the Crimson, Fucito had a hand in each of Harvard’s two second-half tallies, scoring at 63:52 and then assisting on Alex Chi’s goal less than four minutes later at 67:48.
Fucito, a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and one of 48 players named to the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List, leads the Ivy League with 16 points and seven goals. He also paces the Crimson with three game-winning tallies.
Harms made three of his five saves in the first 18 minutes of play, keeping the game scoreless before Harvard’s offense took over. He played the first 83:33 of the game to move to 3-0-0 on the season. Harms has two shutouts and has allowed only one goal on 15 shots faced (.933) in four games for a 0.29 goals-against average. He was also tabbed Ivy League Rookie of the Week earlier this season on Oct. 6.
Baskind, who scored a goal in each Crimson victory last week, leads Harvard with 17 points on six goals and five assists and has a team-best two game-winning goals. She tallied Harvard's first goal in its 4-1 win over Maine Wednesday on a shot from the right side of the cage at 2:59. The freshman phenom also found the back of the net in Harvard's 3-0 victory at Brown Saturday, scoring on a tap in off a cross in the 86th minute.
She has now scored nine points in her last four games, and has a four-game point-scoring streak to match Harvard's four-game win streak. Baskind has helped Harvard to a 7-3-3 overall mark and a 3-1-0 record in the Ivy League.
