October 7, 2007
ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Megan Merritt scored her second goal of the season to lead Harvard past Cornell, 1-0, Saturday in the Crimson’s first Ivy League victory of the season.
Merritt got a pass from freshman Kerry Kartsonis in the 59th minute and put it past Cornell goalkeeper Jodi Palmer. Kartsonis, who scored the game-winning goal Tuesday against Fairfield, now has two assists on the season and has recorded a point in two-straight games.
The Crimson improve to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. Cornell falls to 4-7-0 and remains winless, 0-2, in league play.
Sophomore Lauren Mann had four saves and recorded her seventh win and shutout of the season. Mann made a save on a shot by Cornell’s Cristina Law in the 86th minute to help preserve the win for the Crimson. Harvard’s defenders played another strong game and contributed five blocked shots to help Mann. Defenders Nicole Rhodes (Jr.), Lizzy Nichols (So.), and Kelli Okuji (So.) have started all 11 games for the Crimson.
The Crimson tested Palmer early, taking six shots in the first 15 minutes of the game, and forcing her to make three saves. For the game, Harvard outshot the Big Red, 21-13.
The Crimson will close out the non-league portion of its schedule when Vermont visits Ohiri Field Wednesday at 3 p.m.
