Conn. Native Fired from KC

Onalfo Axed from Wizards Job

August 4, 2009

Connecticut native Curt Onalfo was fired yesterday as head coach of the Kansas City Wizards.

Onalfo, who was born in Brazil but grew up in Ridgefield, Conn., was let go with 12 games to go in the season with the Wizards sitting at 5-7-6, seventh place in the Eastern Conference. His last game at the helm was a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of FC Dallas on Saturday.

This was Onalfo’s third season coaching Kansas City. The former Ridgefield High School star fashioned a 27-27-22 record during his two-plus years, the highlight a trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 2007, where the club eventually lost to the Revs.

Kansas City technical director Peter Vermes will take over as interim head coach.
