Development and Fun

Cape Cod Futsal is bringing the only FIFA-sanctioned indoor game to the Cape.

When winter comes around, soccer players in New England are faced with a dilemma. Cold weather and frozen fields force players indoors, and access to indoor facilities can be limited. Not everyone can easily find a full field indoor complex. Many facilities are boarded. But a growing choice for some players is futsal, and Cape Cod Futsal is one of the organizations bringing the only FIFA-sanctioned indoor game to players on the Cape.

"The only option in the winter for players was to go off the cape," says James Boden, league owner. "I saw there was a need for this opportunity to keep kids playing in the winter and help with development and participation."

Cape Cod Futsal is an affiliate of United States Youth Futsal and the only US Soccer sanctioned futsal league on Cape Cod. USYF is the leading futsal organization in the country and provides an array of tournaments, player development and coaching education opportunities.

Founded in 2011, Cape Cod Futsal served 18 teams in various age groups and had interest from 40 teams in its inaugural year of play on a basketball court at Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School in Marston Mills. In year two, Cape Cod Futsal is expanding to use Cape Cod Community College in addition to Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School. Cape Cod Futsal's Winter Leagues are available for both male and female teams at the U10, U12, U14, high school and adult ages.

From a development perspective, futsal has a lot of positives. The game uses a smaller, low-bounce ball that keeps the game on the ground. This helps players work on development with the ball at their feet. The small confines of the playing surface helps players improve their speed of play and understanding of the movement required on attack and defense.

Having grown to 22 teams for its first winter session this year, Cape Cod Futsal is anticipating 50 to 60 teams in its next session. Youth soccer organizations from towns like Barnstable, Mashpee, Dennis, Yarmouth and Sandwich have all expressed interest. Boden is confident that the buzz is beginning to build for Cape Cod Futsal, and that the organization has the infrastructure in place to handle growth.

"We're hoping we can get teams from as many towns as possible for this session," he says. "If we can help with player development and the kids are having fun, it will push them to continue to play soccer and help them with their outdoor seasons. We are providing a league that is geared toward development and believe that the teams will see the value."
