CCSU Takes Care of Holy Cross

Second Half Goal Does in Crusaders

September 3, 2008

Sophomore Robert Cavener scored the game winning goal in the 79th minute of play to vault Central Connecticut State past Holy Cross, 1-0, in men's soccer action Tuesday night.

CCSU's first test came only three minutes into play when junior goalkeeper Paul Armstrong had to make a save off a header by Holy Cross's Jerry Dickinson. The Crusaders would only have two more attempts on goal in the first 45 minute period.

The Blue Devils had four shot attempts in the first half, including two chance within three minutes of each other by senior captain Yan Klukowski.

The game remained scoreless as the two teams went into the 79th minute. A CCSU cross came across the middle of the box and Cavener put it away after a scramble for the ball for the second goal in Cavener's career.

The Blue Devils did more than hold on the rest of the way, not even allowing another shot on shot attempt in the game.

Central Connecticut is now 1-0 and will play its home opener against St. Bonaventure on Friday September 5 at 3:00 p.m.
